2025 donations donation of English books

Summary of donations to ATA good causes 2024

In keeping with previous years our objectives have been to help Turkish Cypriot causes in need, particularly children to help give them a better start to life or those who are disadvantaged.

In 2024 we made donations to the following:

  • Girne Special Needs School, Karakum. We completely funded the sourcing of items, importation of same and building of a sensory room to give (particularly autistic) children somewhere to calm when they are distressed. This was our biggest expenditure and possibly the largest undertaken by the ATA. It took a large part of the year with all the issues involved.
  • Lapta Lisesi. We funded 21 pairs of specialist running shoes for an international event in Turkiye. Without the shoes, which the school could not afford, the children would not have been competitive.
  • Lefkosa Orthopaedic Association Basketball team. Bedding equipment was purchased to help when the team tour and have to stay away as current bedding was old and unsuitable to give them comfort. A follow up is planned this year to see how else we can help.
  • Various schools in Girne and Lefkosa. English tutorial books have been purchased and donated to schools who cannot afford text books written in English (books in Turkish are free to state schools, but other languages have to be paid for).
  • Cypriot Dance Group – Genç Sanat Severler Derneği. Their aim is to keepTraditional Cypriot Folk Lore Dance and Music alive and pass these traditions onto the next generation. The traditional costumes they wear at events is expensive and were asked to fund a set of dancing shoes for the group. We paid for 30 pairs which should last them a few years.

We plan to continue the work in 2025 and at this stage we have already planned tree planting at the Martyr village (Murataǧa) and a significant purchase of printing materials for the Karakum Special Needs School so they can print their children’s designs on mugs and tee shirts to sell. Collection of bottle tops continues to provide wheelchairs to the Orthopaedic Association and an educational visit is planned in the second quarter of 2025.

ATA Special causes 2024

Our focus in 2024 is a step up from previous years as we are now in receipt of significantly larger monetary inflows both in terms of sponsorship and donations from members. On that basis we propose to direct our main activities as follows:

Lefkoşa Ҫaǧlayan Ҫocuk Yuvası. This is a home that cares for children who for various reasons cannot be cared for by parents or other family members e.g. ill health of parents, unsuitable home conditions, carer parent remarrying, abuse etc.  These children obviously find it difficult to easily integrate into society. 2023 saw us refit bathrooms, toilets, washing areas and bedrooms as well as donating goods and 2 individual presents per child at Christmas. This year will see a continuing relationship and expenditure on repairing a large number of settees and chairs that the children use in the common areas that are badly worn.

Lefkoşa Special Needs school. This is a Ministry of Education run school that looks after 80 children with special needs, who then return home in the evenings. There is one main playground where all the children go many times a day which is uncovered. The result of this is when it is either raining or very hot the playground cannot be properly utilised. We have established that a metal framed roof 14m x 10m would greatly enhance the facility to one that is usable all year round to great benefit of the children and teachers.

Girne Special Needs school. This is also a Ministry of Education run school which looks after 64 children with special needs. This differs quite significantly form the Lefkoşa equivalent as it is in an ex-Red Cross building that is far from ideal in terms of layout with lots of small rooms making logistics much harder than normal. The school has identified three projects that would greatly enhance the environment for the children as follows:

* Small outdoor basketball court for the older children who are regularly bumping into the younger children and causing distress in the one outdoor playground. The new court would be approximately 12m x 10m and adjacent to the playground but allow segregation of the children which is one of the main aims.Technology room (like a chemistry laboratory) to be equipped such that products can be made on site for learning purposes and then sold to the public to help raise funds for the school. These skills could also be used when the children leave the school at age 18 in large or small scale production lines. Products are items such as candles, cologne spray, silicon dishes etc

* Sensory room. This would be a new construction rather than using existing infrastructure and would be particularly aimed at autistic children where calming is often required. An example of such a facility has been seen at the Arno Fuchs School in Berlin.

* Lefkoşa Orthopaedic Association. This is an organisation run entirely from donations from individuals, companies and associations. It provides mobility aids to individuals in TRNC who needs them free of charge. This includes items such as wheelchairs, walking frames and walking sticks etc. In addition, they make prosthetic limbs from scratch to individually fit an individual who may have such a need following an incident and additionally there are 3 well equipped rooms where fully qualified physiotherapists provide their services for a fraction of normal charge-out rates. We have a history of supporting this organisation through the bottle top collection scheme which provides enough funds to purchase about 5 wheelchairs a year. However, the association actually donates between 3 and 4 wheelchairs a week on average at an average cost of 125 US Dollars each.

We propose to fund as many of these projects as possible by (i) raising funds and (ii) working in tandem with sponsor organisations who we would promote as part of this initiative.

We will of course also consider smaller projects during the year that meet our criteria for help.

Any ideas or help you are able to give will be greatly appreciated. In this regard, please speak in the first instance to the ATA Treasurer, Tim Morgan,
